Faith & Health: A Divine Connection

Have you ever noticed how strong and steady your discipline can be when it comes to your spiritual walk with God, yet that same discipline seems to fade when it comes to your health journey? You’re not alone. For many, walking in faith and trust with God is a constant source of strength and courage. But when it’s time to apply those same principles to our health, we often stumble.

This article is an invitation to reflect on the connection between your spiritual journey and your health journey. Both require discipline, patience, and grace. If we truly believe that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, then our health journey becomes a form of worship and obedience. By bringing the same strength, dedication, and trust we apply in our walk with God into our health journey, we can experience a profound transformation — mind, body, spirit & and home.

Our Bodies Are God’s Temple

What Does the Bible Say About Our Bodies as Temples?

The Bible speaks directly about the importance of honoring our bodies. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (ESV), it says:

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

This verse reminds us that our bodies are not just our own to treat however we wish. They are sacred vessels given to us by God. Just as you wouldn’t trash a place of worship, we shouldn’t mistreat our physical bodies. This calls us to be intentional with how we nourish, move, and care for ourselves.  This is not always easy, and very often overlooked.

The Discipline of Worshiping Through Health

When we overindulge in food, rely on comfort foods during stress, or neglect movement and exercise,       we’re not honoring God’s temple. The Bible also warns us against gluttony, as seen in                           Proverbs 23:20-21 (ESV):

“Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.”

Gluttony doesn’t just refer to excess food. It’s the act of giving in to overindulgence and lack of discipline. The same discipline that allows us to resist temptation in our spiritual walk can be applied to our health journey.

Discipline in Both Journeys: It’s About Direction, Not Perfection We Will All Stumble — But God’s Grace Wins

No journey is perfect. We all stumble in our walk with God. But when we fall, we lean on God’s grace and mercy to pick us back up. The same is true for your health journey. There will be days when you miss the mark — you eat the sweets, you skip the workout, or you let stress win. But in Proverbs 24:16 (ESV), it says:

“For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again.“

Just as God’s grace calls us to rise again in our spiritual walk, it also calls us to rise in our health journey. Falling isn’t failure. Staying down is. Grace is a tool to get back up, not an excuse to stay down.  Tomorrow is always a fresh start, spiritually and physically.  Your journey is consistent steps in the right direction.

Lean on Discipline, Not Motivation or Feelings

Motivation comes and goes. Feelings come and go. Discipline is what keeps you moving forward when motivation and feelings fade. Your spiritual discipline — prayer, devotion, and worship — comes from daily, intentional habits. Health is no different. If you only pursue health when you’re feeling “motivated,” progress will be slow. But if you apply daily discipline in your eating habits, movement, and rest, transformation becomes inevitable and generational health will begin.  I have had to learn this in my spiritual journey as well.  Just as I say to each of my coaching clients, “I can’t help you if you don’t show up!” This is the same conviction we feel when we miss church, let life be and excuse to not go.  We are ALL busy, but we ALL “need to show up!”

Consider Hebrews 12:11 (ESV):

“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.“

No one said this journey would be easy, but the reward is worth it. Both your spiritual walk and your health journey will produce a lifestyle of peace, strength, and resilience.

My Personal Journey: From Chaos to Clarity

I wasn’t raised in a church, and I wasn’t taught to follow the Lord until I was an adult making poor choices, with my world falling apart around me. My health journey, however, was always something I could connect to. My health journey has been led by discipline (clean and healthy food), structure (a plan I stuck to), fitness and routine, and determination (doing the hard things). When my health required it, I was ready to fight for my life and beat breast cancer. I was strong and ready to face the fight.

This health journey has always been easier for me. For some, starting with a health journey feels like the easier step into discipline and grace. But learning to have discipline and grace in my spiritual journey came much later in life. Just as I can guide you through every step of your health journey with ease, it took our church family being just as strong and determined to guide Lance and I  through our spiritual journey.

We are blessed to be in a church that teaches the hard things. They don’t shy away from saying the hard truths. Even when those truths were hard to hear and even harder to apply, “hey, how about you quit living in sin and get married” they loved us enough to say them.  I remember thinking, “well heck, that is one step we can do!”  Within a month, on the snowiest day of the year (Dec. 30), our Pastor married us in our living room, with 50 of our closest family and friends cheering us on. They taught us with firm direction with exactly what we needed to do. They loved us through the stumbles, carried us through the falls, and loved us through every stumbling step of the way.

As we grew in our faith, we can now look back and see how foolish we were and how humble we’ve become through God’s grace. This growth compels us to pay it forward. My health journey, which came naturally to me, is so closely related to the same discipline required in our spiritual journey. I may not be able to recite scripture (yet), but I CAN follow directions.

As your health coach, I can help you through the struggles of walking out your health journey. I can pick you up and brush you off after your falls.  I can help you through the temptations that lead you astray. And most importantly, I am not shy about saying the hard things to keep you focused and on track. Most of us start out as spoiled brats — both spiritually and health-wise — and later grow into healthy, humble humans by God’s love, grace and discipline.  This is where I want to help you get rid of your pain.  Learn to follow a plan.  Give you direction, and help guide you every step of the way.  As we both grow deeper in our spiritual and health journey’s, know you are not alone.  Just as our church family was with us, we are with you every step of the way.

Transform Your Health and Your Faith Together

How Mastering One Area Helps the Other

Discipline is like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it becomes. When you build discipline in your health journey — like sticking to a clean eating plan, showing up for a workout, eating clean and healthy, or fasting — you’re also training your ability to stay disciplined in your spiritual walk.

When you conquer cravings and resist the pull of unhealthy habits, you’re building the same spiritual “muscle” that helps you resist temptation, stay faithful in prayer, and persevere through life’s challenges. These two journeys feed into each other. Strong discipline in your health journey will inevitably strengthen your spiritual walk, and vice versa.  Seeking Him first is ALWAYS the answer.
