Are you the One Shopping for your Family

Protecting your health and family is an important job. If you’re the primary shopper for your family—congratulations, you have the power to make a profound impact on your family’s health. But to do that, you’ll need to become an investigator of food labels. Why? Because hidden sugars are lurking in places you’d never expect, and they’re often disguised under names you’d never recognize as sugar.

Learning to spot these hidden sugars on labels can be a game-changer for your health and the health of your loved ones. In this article, you’ll learn how to recognize hidden sugars, the many sneaky names used to disguise them, and how to become your family’s greatest advocate for health.

The Hidden Sugar Crisis

Did you know that sugar isn’t just in cookies, cakes, and candy? It’s also in bread, pasta sauce, “healthy” granola bars, and even foods labeled as “organic” or “natural.” The food industry uses over 60 different names for sugar to make their products seem healthier than they really are.

The issue is that added sugar spikes your insulin, increases inflammation, and leads to a cascade of health issues like weight gain, insulin resistance, and metabolic disease. That’s why it’s so important to know how to spot hidden sugars before you bring these products into your home.

Our Rules for Reading Labels

When shopping for groceries, use these simple rules to protect yourself and your family from hidden sugars:

    1. Total Carbs First

Look at the “Total Carbohydrates” on the nutrition label. If it’s too high for your goals, put it back. Remember a healthy Carb Limit is 20 TOTOAL CARBS. Most of us find 10-15 total carbs serves us better in reaching our health goals.  I realize this is low, but trust me, this is a slow and steady transition.  Trust the process.

    2. Ingredients Next

Check the ingredient list for any hidden sugars or sneaky fillers.  If there are more than 4-5 ingredients, I usually put it back.  Once you get too many ingredients, it just gets too risky. Words you can’t pronounce, put it back.  Words you have no idea what they mean, leave it on the shelf.  Stick with more whole foods and fewer ingredients to keep your health on track.

    3. Ignore the Front of the Package

Marketing claims like “All Natural,” “Healthy,” “Organic,” “Keto Friendly,” or “Low-Carb” are there to make you feel good and impulse buy, not to tell you the truth. Focus on the back of the package where the real information is. Even then you have to be skeptical.  If in doubt…. put it back.

The Many Names for Sugar

The FDA allows sugar to be labeled under a variety of names. This can make it difficult to spot hidden sugars on labels. Here’s a list of some of the most common names for sugar you’ll see on food labels:

  • Agave Nectar
  • Barley Malt
  • Beet Sugar
  • Brown Rice Syrup
  • Cane Sugar
  • Cane Juice
  • Coconut Sugar
  • Corn Syrup
  • Dextrose
  • Evaporated Cane Juice
  • Fructose
  • Fruit Juice Concentrate
  • Glucose
  • High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)
  • Honey
  • Lactose
  • Malt Syrup
  • Maltose
  • Molasses
  • Rice Syrup
  • Sucrose
  • Turbinado Sugar

Where Hidden Sugars Lurk

You might expect sugar in desserts, but did you know it’s often hiding in these foods too?

  • Salad Dressings — Even “low-fat” dressings are packed with sugar to make up for the loss of flavor.
  • Condiments — Ketchup, BBQ sauce, and pasta sauces are sugar bombs in disguise.
  • Bread and Baked Goods — Many store-bought breads and tortillas, yes, even keto-friendly ones, contain added sugars to extend shelf life and enhance taste.
  • Yogurt — Flavored yogurts are often filled with sugar to make them “taste better.”
  • Granola and “Health” Bars — Even “organic” and “natural” options are often loaded with sugar.

Don’t Fall for These Tricky Labels

The front of the package is marketing—not truth. Ignore the pretty pictures, health claims, and buzzwords like:

  • “No Added Sugar” — It might still contain fruit juice concentrate, which is just another form of sugar.
  • “Low-Carb” or “Fat-Free” — When fat is removed, sugar is often added to make up for lost flavor. Low-Carb to others, is still way to high for us living well under 20 Total Carbs a day.
  • “Organic” — Organic sugar is still sugar.
  • “Natural” — Natural doesn’t mean sugar-free. It’s just a feel-good label with no regulated definition.
