Have you ever felt like a two-year-old throwing a tantrum when cravings hit?
Are you breaking free from food addiction? Is that inner “spoiled brat” demanding sugar, carbs, or junk food right NOW? If you’ve started your keto or low-carb journey, you’ve likely encountered this phase. When the dopamine hit from carbs and sugar is gone, your brain throws a fit, and the cravings come on strong.
This isn’t just about willpower—food addiction is real, and many of us face it daily. But here’s the good news: you can break free from this addiction. With the right approach and a supportive community, you can silence that spoiled brat and take back control of your health.
Recognizing the “Spoiled Brat” Symptom
When we cut out addictive foods like sugar and carbs, our brain panics. You may feel irritable, tired, or frustrated—these are all signs of withdrawal. Your brain is throwing a tantrum because it’s not getting the dopamine rush it’s used to. The cravings can feel overwhelming, but they’re temporary.
This addiction doesn’t just apply to sugar and carbs. It can apply to anything—soda, chips, coffee, alcohol, or comfort foods. Take a moment to ask yourself, what’s controlling you? Recognizing where your addiction lies is the first step toward breaking free.
What Happens When You Give In
If you give in to these cravings, it’s like rewarding bad behavior. Think about it: when a child throws a tantrum and gets what they want, they’re more likely to act out again. The same goes for cravings. Every time you give in, you’re reinforcing the behavior, making it harder to resist next time.
But if you work through the tantrum, you’re building strength. Each time you resist a craving, you retrain your brain to handle it. Over time, the cravings will weaken, and you’ll feel more in control.
How to Work Through the Cravings
Here are some steps to help you break free from food addiction:
- Acknowledge the Addiction: Food addiction is real. Recognizing it allows you to approach it like any other addiction.
- Ask What’s Really Wrong: Are you stressed, bored, or emotional? Often, cravings are triggered by emotions, not hunger. Journaling can help you uncover what’s driving the craving.
- Find Healthy Dopamine Boosts: Instead of turning to food, try:
- Taking a walk
- Listening to music
- Spending time with loved ones
- Engaging in a hobby that you have left behind
- Call a friend or loved one
- Reunite with an old friend
- Send cards or hand written letters to long lost friends to brighten their day, and fill your heart with joy
- Pray, or do a bible study
- Refer to Your ‘Why’: Why did you start this journey? To lose weight? Reverse diabetes? Reverse Neuropathy? Brain Health? Take back control of your health? Keep your ‘why’ front and center when cravings strike.
