From Bedridden to Hope: Linda’s 100-Pound Weight Loss Success Story Through Faith, Nutritional Ketosis, and Metabolic Healing
Every once in a while, someone comes into your life whose story reminds you why you do what you do. Linda Zeban’s 100-pound weight loss success story is one of those stories – but it is also so much more. It is a story of faith, perseverance, metabolic healing, and the hope that can be found even after years of chronic illness.
Where Hope Began
“I Want to Live”
The first time I spoke with Linda, it wasn’t across a table or in a support group room. It was through a FaceTime call, and even that was hard for her. Linda was lying flat in bed with oxygen tubing beneath her nose, unable to sit upright long enough to hold a conversation, and we later joked that she looked like “Wilson” from Home Improvement because I could only see her from the nose up. Even in one of the darkest seasons of her life, she hadn’t lost her sense of humor or her smile, though behind that smile was a woman carrying more discouragement than most people could ever imagine.
By the time Linda reached out, she wasn’t new to metabolic health or ketogenic nutrition. She had spent more than two years faithfully following a ketogenic lifestyle, lost nearly fifty pounds, and when her progress stalled, she didn’t quit. She tightened her nutrition even further and committed to three strict months of carnivore eating, believing that more discipline would finally produce results. Instead, her body moved in the opposite direction and she gained thirty pounds back.
That kind of discouragement is one many people living with obesity, chronic illness, or stalled metabolic health understand all too well. You can do everything you’ve been taught to do, say no to foods you once loved, fast when everyone else is eating, and still feel like you’re losing the fight. Linda wasn’t lazy and she wasn’t looking for shortcuts. She had simply reached the point where she quietly wondered if her body was beyond repair.
By the age of fifty-six, Linda weighed 365 pounds, but her health struggles hadn’t begun in adulthood. They had begun more than forty years earlier. At just fifteen years old, Linda underwent life-saving surgery for severe ulcerative colitis. The surgery saved her life, but it also changed it forever. Doctors removed a large portion of her intestines and created an internal pouch, leaving her to navigate lifelong digestive challenges that most people around her could never see.
Over the decades that followed, one diagnosis seemed to lead to another. Blood clots. Heart complications. Chronic inflammation. Severe knee pain. Declining mobility. Eventually, her orthopedic surgeon told her she desperately needed both knees replaced, but he refused to perform the surgery until she lost one hundred pounds. Then her breathing began to fail. Walking across a room left her gasping for air, and she was eventually diagnosed with Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome, requiring oxygen twenty-four hours a day.
Linda during one of the most difficult seasons of her health journey before beginning metabolic healing
Soon afterward, Linda found herself in the Intensive Care Unit with critically elevated troponin levels. The chaplain was called. Family gathered around her bed, believing they were preparing to say goodbye. She was eventually discharged with very few answers and even less hope, wondering if this was simply what the rest of her life would look like.
When Linda and I began working together, she shared those memories with me. As she described that season of her life, she spoke four simple words that have stayed with me ever since.
“I want to live.”
Those weren’t just words. They were the cry of a woman who wasn’t asking for another diet or another quick fix. She was asking for another chance.
As a triple-negative breast cancer survivor, those words reached a place deep inside me that few people will ever fully understand. Our diagnoses were different, but our determination came from the same place. We had both reached the point where we were willing to do whatever it took to fight for tomorrow.
That moment created a connection between us that had nothing to do with weight loss. It was built on hope, faith, and the unwavering decision that we were not ready to quit.
Sometimes the Bravest Step Is Going Back to the Beginning
When people hear Linda’s story, they often assume she came to me because she didn’t know enough about nutrition or metabolic health. Nothing could be further from the truth.
As I listened to Linda share her story, one question continued to come to my mind.
What was her body trying to tell us?
One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned through my own health journey and years of coaching is that information alone doesn’t create healing. Every person’s chemistry is different, which means healing isn’t about copying someone else’s plan. It’s about learning to understand the signals your own body has been sending you all along.
Linda’s body had been through surgeries, trauma, decades of inflammation, and years of adapting just to survive. An ordinary approach would have failed her entirely. Before we could move forward, we needed to understand where her body was today – not where we hoped it would be.
After reviewing her history, her symptoms, and her patterns, I gently told her something I knew would be difficult to hear. And it was not easy to say either.
“Linda, I think we need to go back to the beginning. We need to build a strong foundation to move forward.”
Months later she admitted something she’d never told anyone. “After we hung up that day,” she said, “I cried.” I can only imagine what that must have felt like. After spending years fighting for her life and doing everything she knew to do, she was now hearing me tell her we needed to start over.
Most people would have walked away. Instead, Linda took the conversation to the Lord, prayed over it, wrestled with it, and chose by faith to trust me and trust the process, before she could see where it would lead. Looking back, that wasn’t a step backward at all. It became the turning point in Linda’s journey. Sometimes courage isn’t found in pushing harder. Sometimes it’s found in becoming humble enough to rebuild the foundation beneath your feet. This is exactly what we did.
When Data Replaced Doubt: Learning to Listen to Her Body Instead of the Scale
One of the biggest turning points in Linda’s journey came when we stopped letting food addiction and emotions dictate the next decision and started letting her body’s own chemistry guide us. I don’t believe the scale tells the whole story, and I don’t believe in guessing when data is available. I teach every client at Journey to Healing to become a student of their own body, because our bodies are constantly communicating with us if we’re willing to listen.
Linda stopped asking the scale if she was succeeding. Instead, she learned to ask her body’s chemistry. Day after day, her glucose, ketones, and Dr Boz Ratio gave us objective feedback that helped us make the next best decision. Little by little, uncertainty was replaced with confidence.
The scale measures pounds. Your metabolism tells a much bigger story. Linda’s glucose, ketones, and Daily Boz Ratio became the GPS that guided each next decision—and ultimately changed the direction of her life. This dashboard isn’t about perfect numbers. It’s about learning to listen. Every reading gave us another piece of information, helping Linda make the next best decision instead of guessing or letting the scale determine her success. Over time, those small, informed decisions became the foundation for extraordinary healing.
One afternoon during one of our coaching sessions, I asked Linda to imagine we were taking a cross-country road trip together.
“Who’s driving the car?” I asked.
She smiled and answered, “I am.”
“Exactly,” I said. “You’ll always be the driver. My job isn’t to take the steering wheel. I just help you navigate your journey with fresh eyes on the road.”
Then I asked her what she would do if she were driving somewhere she’d never been before.
“You’d use a GPS.”
That simple conversation became one of the most important turning points in Linda’s journey.
I explained that her Keto-Mojo meter and her Dr Boz Ratio were becoming her GPS. A GPS doesn’t criticize you for taking a wrong turn, and it certainly doesn’t shame you for needing to recalculate. It simply tells you where you are today so you can make the next best decision. Our bodies work the same way. They are constantly communicating with us, but we have to learn how to listen.
For years, Linda had allowed the scale to become the loudest voice in her life. Every gain felt like a failure. Every stall made her wonder if all of her hard work had been for nothing. But the scale could never tell the whole story. It could measure pounds, but it could never measure healing.
As we began tracking her blood glucose, ketones, and Dr Boz Ratio, everything changed. Those numbers stopped feeling like judgment and started becoming information for her journey. They helped us recognize patterns, understand her body’s unique chemistry, and make decisions based on data instead of feelings.
I would often say, “don’t prove it to me, prove it to yourself and check your numbers.”
Linda remained the driver.
Her body’s chemistry and her Keto-Mojo became the GPS.
And I simply had the privilege of sitting in the passenger seat, helping her understand what her body was telling us and encouraging her as we navigated each turn together. As her coach, I am simply the co-pilot with fresh eyes on the navigation tools.
That simple shift changed everything. Instead of guessing, Linda began making confident decisions rooted in knowledge rather than fear. Instead of chasing a number on the scale, she focused on rebuilding her health one healthy cell at a time. As her metabolism improved, inflammation began to settle, her breathing became easier, her confidence returned, and for the first time in years, she truly believed healing was possible.
For years, Linda had treated the scale as the final verdict on whether she was succeeding or failing. For years, the scale had been the loudest voice in Linda’s life. Every gain felt like failure, and every stall made her question whether healing was even possible. But the scale could never tell the whole story. It could measure pounds. It couldn’t measure healing. As we shifted focus toward blood glucose readings, ketone measurements, and her DBR, those numbers stopped feeling like judgment and started becoming information, sometimes reminding us to be patient, sometimes confirming we were on the right path, and sometimes revealing that stress, sleep, or hormones were shaping her progress more than food alone.
From that moment forward, Linda stopped chasing a number on the scale and began rebuilding her health one healthy cell at a time. As her chemistry improved, her confidence grew, her breathing became easier, inflammation settled, and her energy returned. She began believing something she hadn’t believed in a long time: maybe healing really was possible. Linda’s breakthrough didn’t happen because we found a magic answer. It happened because she stopped fighting against her body and finally began listening to it. For the first time in years, her body wasn’t her enemy. It had become her greatest teacher.
Rebuilding More Than Her Health
As Linda’s health slowly began to improve, I realized we were no longer just rebuilding her metabolism—we were rebuilding a life that chronic illness had quietly stolen over many years. Healing had become about so much more than losing weight or lowering inflammation. It was about restoring the simple moments most people take for granted: sitting around the dinner table, attending church, spending time with family, and dreaming about the future again.
One lesson I’ve learned through coaching is that chronic illness never impacts just one person. It reaches into every corner of a home, changing routines, relationships, and responsibilities. That was certainly true for Linda, but it was equally true for her husband, Steve.
Every morning before leaving for work, Steve made sure Linda had everything she needed for the day. He prepared meals, organized medications, placed necessities within her reach, and quietly carried the weight of wondering how she would manage until he returned home that evening. He never asked for recognition. He never complained about the sacrifices. He simply loved his wife the way he had promised he would on their wedding day.
As a wife who has walked through my own serious health challenges, this part of Linda’s story touches my heart in a very personal way. There is an incredible sense of peace in knowing your husband would willingly care for you through your darkest days. That kind of love provides security that words can hardly describe. Yet at the same time, no wife dreams of becoming completely dependent on the man she loves, for daily routine care, and no husband dreams of watching his wife lose the independence she once enjoyed. It is a role neither spouse ever hopes to fill, yet Steve embraced it with quiet strength, unwavering faithfulness, and unconditional love.
One of the most meaningful photographs from Linda’s journey isn’t a before-and-after picture. It isn’t a number on the scale. It isn’t even Linda. It’s a simple photograph of Steve asleep in a hospital chair while keeping watch over Linda during yet another hospital stay. Some people might see an exhausted husband catching a few moments of sleep. I see something entirely different. I see covenant. I see faithfulness. I see a man living out the vows he made years ago: for better or for worse, in sickness and in health. Through it all, he carries the load for them both.
Moments like these remind me why Journey to Healing has never been simply about nutrition. Nutrition is one of the tools we use to rebuild health, but it has never been the destination. The destination has always been helping people reclaim the life illness tried to steal. Healing isn’t measured only by healthier lab work, lower blood sugar, or weight loss. It is measured by restored marriages, renewed hope, stronger families, and ordinary moments that once seemed impossible.
Watching Linda and Steve together today reminded me that this journey has always been about far more than food. It has been about rebuilding a home, restoring dignity, and creating a future that neither of them believed was still possible. And in many ways, I believe the most beautiful chapters of their story are still waiting to be written.
It’s about rebuilding your mind, your body, your spirit, and your home… one choice at a time.
The Lunch We Had Been Waiting For
For more than a year, Linda and I had built our friendship through phone calls, Zoom coaching sessions, FaceTime conversations, and countless text messages. We celebrated victories from hundreds of miles apart in different states, prayed through disappointments together, and watched God slowly write a story that neither of us could have imagined. Yet despite everything we had shared, we had never actually met in person.
That finally changed the day Lance and I drove to meet Linda and Steve for lunch after a long weekend with family out of state.
When we walked into the restaurant, Linda was already sitting at the table in her wheelchair. The moment she saw us, her smile lit up the room. I didn’t walk to the chair across from her – I walked directly beside her. Before we ever ordered lunch, before we talked about weight loss or blood work or coaching, we shared our very first hug and a few tears. God is so good. And Linda is a miracle.
As I sat beside her that afternoon, it was impossible not to think back to the very first time we had met. It wasn’t in a restaurant. It wasn’t at a conference or a speaking event. It was through a FaceTime call with Linda lying flat in bed, oxygen tubing beneath her nose, unable to sit upright long enough to have a conversation. We laugh about it now because she jokingly says she looked like “Wilson” from Home Improvement. I could only see her from the nose up.
Looking at the woman sitting beside me, it was almost impossible to believe she was the same woman I had first met on that FaceTime call. She was no longer confined to her bed or wondering if her life was coming to an end. She was laughing, smiling, making plans for the future, and living a life that once seemed impossible. That is what healing looks like.
Instead, I was sitting beside a woman who had lost more than one hundred pounds, dramatically improved her metabolic health, regained her independence, and was once again living a life she feared she had lost forever.
As I looked around the restaurant, I couldn’t help but smile. To everyone else, it probably looked like four friends sharing lunch together. No one else in that room knew what it had taken for Linda to get there. No one else knew about the hospital rooms, the oxygen tubing, the discouragement, the tears, the prayers, the countless faithful decisions that had led to that very moment.
I knew.
And sitting there beside her, I realized I wasn’t simply sharing a meal with a client.
I was witnessing an answered prayer.
Linda and Steve no longer measure success the way they once did, and neither do I. Success isn’t found in a number on the scale. It’s found in moments like this – returning to church, enjoying lunch with friends, laughing with family, making plans for the future, and believing tomorrow holds more promise than fear. Together, they can rebuild a marriage they both can enjoy.
Those are the victories no scale will ever measure.
Those are the victories worth celebrating.
The Kitchen: Where Healing Comes Home
People often ask me what success looks like. Most expect me to point to the scale, talk about blood sugar, or celebrate before-and-after photographs. Those victories certainly matter, and Linda has earned every one of them through extraordinary courage, unwavering faith, and thousands of intentional decisions. But when I picture Linda’s future, I don’t immediately think about a number on the scale or another milestone in her health journey. I picture something much more ordinary.
I picture a kitchen.
Steve pulls into the driveway after another day at work, just as he has done for years. For so long, he walked through that front door, tired yet wondering what kind of day Linda had experienced from her bed, hoping she had made it safely through another afternoon, and preparing to step immediately back into the role of caregiver. Doing everything Linda needed. One loving need at a time. One day, however, I believe that story is going to look very different.
I imagine Steve coming home from work one evening and opening the front door to the familiar smell of dinner cooking. He follows the aroma into the kitchen and finds Linda standing at the stove, preparing a meal for the man who faithfully prepared meals for her during the hardest years of her life. Not because she has to, but because she can.
To someone else, it might look like an ordinary evening. To me, it would be nothing short of extraordinary. It would be a quiet reminder that healing isn’t always found in dramatic moments. Sometimes it’s found in the simple gifts we once took for granted – the ability to stand in your own kitchen, prepare a meal, laugh around the dinner table, and enjoy another ordinary evening with the person you love.
If I could ask God for one more gift for Linda and Steve, it would be this. After dinner is finished and the dishes are put away, I pray Steve reaches for Linda’s hand. I hope they turn on their favorite song and dance together in that kitchen. Not because anyone else is watching or because they’re celebrating another number on the scale, but because after everything they’ve overcome, an ordinary evening together has become one of life’s greatest blessings.
Today, Linda’s smile tells a story no scale ever could. More than 100 pounds lighter, she’s rebuilding her health, reclaiming hope, and living proof that healing is possible one faithful choice at a time.
That, to me, is what Journey to Healing has always been about.
Yes, people lose weight. Blood sugar improves. Ketones rise. Inflammation falls. Those victories matter, and they deserve to be celebrated because they often represent years of faithfulness and hard work. But they have never been the destination.
The destination has always been rebuilding lives.
It is helping someone rebuild their health after years of chronic illness. It is restoring confidence that the disease tried to steal. It is strengthening marriages that have carried unimaginable burdens. It is bringing families back around the dinner table and creating a legacy of health that reaches children and grandchildren for generations to come.
If you’re reading Linda’s story today and wondering whether it’s too late for you, I want you to hear this from the bottom of my heart: it is not too late. Your diagnosis is not the end of your story. Your weight does not determine your worth, and your setbacks do not define your future. As long as God gives you another sunrise, He is giving you another opportunity to make one more healthy choice, one more faithful decision, and one more step toward rebuilding the life He created you to live.
Linda’s story isn’t remarkable simply because she lost more than one hundred pounds. It’s remarkable because she chose hope when fear would have been easier. She chose faith before she could see the outcome, and she chose to begin again when most people would have given up.
That decision changed everything.
And I believe it can change everything for you, too.
The best is yet to come.
